February 10, 2011 Meeting Minutes

The February 10, 2011 AAUW meeting was called to order by Pres. Marilyn M at 8:5o pm after an informative program with Ms. Mary Worke, School Counselor:  How are the Girls Doing?

Members present included:  Betty B, Jean P, Phyllis D, Loretta I, Joanne S, Cindy L, Austra H, Beth K, Marilyn W, Leanne H, Marilyn M, Mary M, Dianna V, Heidi H.

Secretary Heidi H distributed paper copies of the Jan 2011 minutes.  No changes were made.  A newsletter contest for state branches was announced, to be held at state convention.  The latest edition of The Pine is online (see blog entry and click on hyperlink).

Treasurer Dianna V reported a balance of $2536.62 in our checking account with no outstanding bills.

Program VP Loretta I previewed our March program.  After some discussion, it was decided that our business meeting will be held BEFORE our program, beginning at 6:30 pm in Mary M’s class room (Room 112, just off of main media center doors).

Public Policy:  A press release was mentioned and circulated by Mary M, citing a bill in Minnesota legislature which could  jeopardize equal pay standards.

Other Cmte Reports:  none

Old Business:  none

New Business:  Nominating Committee appointments were discussed.  3 members are needed for this committee to fill the following positions:  VP for Program, VP for Membership and Treasurer.  After much discussion, current Program VPs (Loretta I, Betty B) were asked to consider re-election for a second, two-year term.  Beth K volunteered to serve as Treasurer.  Questions were raised regarding responsibility of VP for membership.  This officer does not handle membership rolls, but rather handles the applications which are then forwarded to the Treasurer.  Two members then stepped forward to be part of the the Nominating Cmte:  Jean P and Marilyn M.  They will be seeking to fill one position, VP Membership.

Two new members are needed service on the Scholarship Committee.  Carry-over members of Scholarship Committee include:  Betty B and Karen V.  New volunteers for Scholarship Committee are:  Leanne H and Austra H.

Convention details were circulated.  BP branch is able to send up to 3 voting delegates.  Cost of registration ($50/person) is covered by branch, though meals and room would be extra.  Deadline for registration is March 15th.  No volunteers stepped forward.

Announcements:  Childrens books may contain lead if manufactured before 1986.  International Women’s Day is March 8th.  And Equal Pay Day is April 12th.
